Tip 1: Keep the leaves dry

Leaf health is crucial to avoid tomato diseases such as late blight and brown rot. Moisture on the leaves can favour infestation with these fungi. Here are some advanced techniques to prevent this:

Optimal planting: plant tomatoes generously spaced to improve air circulation and allow the leaves to dry faster. This helps to reduce the humidity around the plants.

Covering: Protect your tomatoes with a roof or cover to keep rain out.

Mulching: A layer of mulch around the plants can prevent water from splashing onto the leaves when watering. Mulch also keeps the soil moist and reduces weed growth.

Tip 2: Enrich the soil with Effective Microorganisms

A healthy soil environment is the key to strong tomato plants. Use this method to improve soil quality:

Microorganisms in the soil: EM can improve the soil structure and increase the availability of nutrients. You can add Multikraft Roots directly to the soil or use fermented compost (Bokashi) to increase soil fertility. The best way to make compost is to use our compost starter and our other Bokashi products.

Tip 3: Optimise watering techniques

Proper watering is crucial for healthy tomato plants:

Olla clay pots: These unglazed, porous clay pots are buried in the ground near the plants and regularly filled with water. The water seeps slowly through the porous walls and ensures an even supply of water to the roots. Olla pots minimise evaporation and prevent overwatering, which is particularly beneficial during hot weather periods.

Moisture sensors: Use moisture sensors to monitor the water content in the soil. This allows you to determine exactly when the plants need water - and avoid overwatering at the same time.

Substrate selection: Use a well-drained substrate that absorbs and stores water well while draining excess water. Organic black soil offers your tomatoes everything they need.

Tip 4: Effective microorganisms to strengthen leaves

Spraying tomato leaves with Effective Microorganisms can significantly improve plant health.

Fermented plant extracts: Use fermented garlic and chilli extract to strengthen the plants' defences against pests and diseases.

Regular applications: Spray the leaves repeatedly with a solution of Effective Microorganisms and plant extracts, especially after rainfall or high humidity, to form a protective biofilm.
