Using EM for composting

Josef Felbermair has been using Effective Microorganisms for many years. He also sees major benefits in using EM in the field of composting. He told Multikraft how his organic fertiliser puts him a step ahead in spring.

"I try to maintain a continuous cycle in my garden. I'm convinced that this is the only way to make optimal use of garden space. And of course compost plays a major role in this system. I only use waste from my garden, cat litter, manure from my two chickens and household waste on my compost heap.

I sieve the compost and use it in flower pots. The coarse material left over after sieving makes ideal mulch for fruit trees, shrubs and vegetable patches.
I've found that, particularly in autumn when there is a wealth of compost material available such as waste fruit, woods, perennials, manure, as well as remains of vegetable plants, foliage and grass cuttings, it is important to maintain a balance between the substances (carbon:nitrogen) on the compost heap.

I follow the fermentation principle (compost heap with air-tight seal), as I see two major benefits in this approach: odour-free, highly nutritious compost. With a little basal rock dust and EM-Active, I can quickly transform my waste into a valuable fertiliser. It couldn’t be easier to prepare for next year's garden season as early as autumn with nutritious EM compost."
